You will join the Information
Technology (IT) Department which
provides computing services for all aspects of the laboratory's activities. These
require a wide range of technologies and skills including the provision of
computing facilities, local and wide area networking, platforms for computing
environments, software development, databases, desktop environments and a wide
range of system integration and management tasks.

main activities will consist of:
As Computer Technician in the SAO Section, you
will work as a member of the team responsible for the day-to-day operation of:
- CERN's large Grid computing fabric (several thousand processors running the Linux operating system, over 60PB on-line disk storage and 46PB tape storage).
- Windows services (roughly 600 servers offering file and application services as well as terminal service consoles), Web services (70 servers), and Mail services (40 servers).
- Testing new servers and diagnosing problems with them.
- Installing the Operating System and deploying various software packages on new servers.
- Responding to alarms on production systems, most of them running Linux, in accordance with well-defined procedures
- Helping in diagnosing undocumented alarms
- Organising and supervising hardware repairs
- Upgrading software on production systems
- Creating and maintaining documentation for the team
